Most of today’s Muslims take their bodies, their physical wherewithal to hajj; very few Muslims take their minds and the reasoning to hajj. Here is where Shariati’s Hajj stands out. He made sense out of the actions, activities and etiquettes of hajj. He tries to explain the symbolism of hajj. He tells us that we exemplify a duty or a responsibility by everything we do in hajj. The larger tasks of life are expressed in the movements and motions of conscientious Muslims who should know better than to go to hajj and reduce it to a human stampede that is driven by instinct and not stimulated by thought.
